I do my walking and biking in an area of meadows and farms around my town. And there currently is this Nordic Walking hype among the overweight housewives of over 40 years of age in my area. Ironically, I have yet to see anyone do this that does not fit this category. Not surprising, because if you do want to keep up to date on the latest gossip, you have to be part of the house wife in-crowd. And by lack of tupperware parties, you need to go where they go. Without Nordic walking equipment, you will miss on the latest and greatest of who is doing whom, who is having a weed plantation in their attic, and who’s kids got diagnosed with ADHD and depression (at the same time.)
Nordic walking, basically is walking with ski poles. The past few weeks this meant, walking with ski poles in over 25-32 degree celcius heat, in a country that is as flat as a pancake.
Sometimes the sight is rather sad. You see women walking about the speed that most of us could crawl, with their sad little ski poles being dragged over the ground. Oh, if their ski poles could only talk. It’s like the depressed version of Nordic Walking. (Then again scandinavia does have the highest suicide rates in Europe.)
I secretly have been inwardly laughing at the flocks of housewives doing this sport, thinking of saying:
“The ski lift is over there…”
“Who stole your mountain?”
Making skiing sounds: “woosh, woosh, woosh.”
Start jodeling: “Jodela heetee”
Doing the bird song + dance (song that is Holland’s favorite for winter sport vacations.)
Usually I speed past these women, as they go too slow to call their walking an actual work out. I can not imagine them getting anything out of it.
Though before writing this post I thought that I would never be caught dead with a nordic walking poles in my hands. I just read that with walking equally as fast, you can create up to 46% more caloric burn according to research presented by the International Nordic Walking Association.
Now we have to note the “up to” 46%, but still even if it is 10% extra, you are still working off more calories by walking the same amount of steps.
Hmmmmmm.
The hype about Nordic Walking (Ski Walking) is ALL true. Walking with correctly fitted poles and utilizing easy to learn technique results in the burning of up to 40% more calories than regular walking! That’s right – 3 laps around the block with poles = 5 laps around the block regular walking with out poles. Huge increase in calorie burn and a more effective cardio workout as well. The goodness (good physics) of Nordic Walking doesn’t stop there. Using correct fitting poles provides walkers perfect walking posture. Even men stop walking like apes! Perfect length poles help us to automatically walk with a super straight back – better walking posture is biomechanically a good thing. This improved walking posture when combined with the unique 4-Wheel-Drive type action of walking with poles radically reduces the stress to the shins, knees, hips and back. Nordic Walking is low impact and yet provides a highly effective workout – burning more calories and working more muscle groups than regular walking.

Now over 6 million Europeans are walking with poles every day. I found out by accident that the poles are great for runners with shin splints and runner’s knee + almost anyone with shin, knee, hip or back problems + folks with balance issues including MS and Parkinson’s + effective for weight loss (when combined with a healthy diet)+ cardio rehab + physical therapy and the list goes on.

We get lots of crazy comments like “where is the snow”, but once you strap into a pair of real Nordic Walking Straps on real Nordic Walking poles you will be shocked at how the poles immediately improve posture and how much exercise your upper body gets – all the benefits of hand weights and none of the negatives (I have NEVER allowed my runners and skiers to use hand weights while walking or running).
Caution: There are a lot of poor quality poles flooding the market. Poles that don’t have real Nordic Walking straps and cheap adjustable poles. In the past there have been articles in SkiPost that relate to the use of ski poles during your dry land training. There are some SkiPost readers who enjoy cross-country skiing, but are not terribly race oriented. There is alway someone somewher that knows it better or has something to say about a new trend. why would you laugh about people that go out and do something when it comes to fitness and health. do you think sitting inside eating chips is better?
anything is better than doing nothing. I don’t think we should laugh about these people and if they go slow…pass them and be proud of them for doing something.
This is a story about humor/tongue and cheek, vs taking life way too seriously.
Was I laughing at people who do something to increase their fitness and health? No. I am laughing at people, who under the pretense of that, stand on a street corning to then slowly walk around the block to catch up on the latest (what sounds like malicious) gossip.
Did I write that sitting inside eating chips is better? Is that a genuine question, or simply meaning to put words in my mouth I did not say, with the result of making me look bad over something I did not say? I think that what 5 months of keeping a blog about diet and exercise makes it obvious about what I think about eating chips vs working out. However, in this case of the housewives in my neighbourhood we are not talking about fitness vs chips. Since we are talking about gossip, or chips, then I’d say that eating chips is probably a better idea. At least it makes their life miserable, instead of cutting down someone elses.
Not that any of that is relevant anymore. That time has already been past and gone since somewhere in August, when it started raining. I wrote the above during good weather. Right now there are no more house wives outside, I suppose they only want to do their Nordic Walking when it’s sunny out. I guess their “fitness” spurt was very short lived. I think this sort of proofs my point in making fun of the whole thing. If you want to be fit, be fit. It’s better to stay away from hypes, and just do what’s right and get fit. The combination of both should be purely coincidental.
